I began my mediation practice nearly thirty years ago while I was still living in Los Angeles, when mediation was a fringe endeavor. But mediation by now is well known: the mediating attorney remains neutral and helps the parties to reach the settlement that is the best result for both parties and the children. The essence of mediation is neutrality, which results in lower fees and less trauma for everyone in the family.

The knowledge and demeanor of the mediator — respect for both parties and deep experience in helping to craft solutions to difficult problems — results in dissolving the impasse and moving toward successful conclusion of all issues. The agreement reached through mediation is just as binding as though the parties participate in trial before a judge. But the financial cost is usually about ten percent when compared to the old-fashioned system. This is largely because the parties keep control of the outcome and craft the solutions that work for everyone. And the parties’ experience of the process is hopeful and life-affirming rather than negative and adversarial.

Attorney Consultation

I have deep experience as a consultant to individuals. They may have another attorney or may be participating in mediation and need a second opinion. They may represent themselves and want some expert assistance. In my years at Divorce Helpline my attorney-employees and I spoke with about a hundred thousand people, and offered a wide choice of help — one consultation meeting, many meetings, help with negotiations and setting strategies, help with documents, help of all kinds. I remain available for this work.

Out of Court

In no case do I go to court. If you need representation in court I can refer you to some excellent practitioners. However, I believe that energy is better spent in private meetings with the parties, rather than in preparing a case for trial. I am a committed, career mediator. That commitment gives my work depth and breadth that is not available when the non-adversarial work is relegated to a subordinate status.
