This is the new Wunderkind of the non-adversarial family law world. Collaborative law is similar to mediation, in that the goal is to reach the best resolution of all issues and keep control of the outcome. However, there are two attorneys instead of one, giving each party the chance to work in depth with one attorney. All meetings are held in our private offices in an atmosphere of calmness, support and creativity. The attorneys promise in writing not to go to court. Other neutral professionals are usually on the team, including a financial professional, a psychological coach, and a child specialist if required.
The financial professional offers help with budgeting, valuation of business and other assets, and tax advice. The psychological coach will offer guidance before, during and after our meetings to help you to deal most effectively with the realities of planning a new life for you and your child. The child specialist advocates for the child, giving him or her a voice in the process and increases the possibility of a healthy adjustment for your child. The best teams treat the couple as though they were in mediation; this achieves the best and deepest result.
Collaborative law is more costly than mediation, but still only about twenty-five percent of the cost of an adversarial divorce.
